Social Movement Research

Social groups provide context and meaning in the life of an individual; studying social movements illuminates the significance of an individual’s actions, allowing greater clarity in understanding why people act the way they do. In understanding the motivations of individuals, ARTIS hopes to provide more sound and impartial data to the relatively small body of empirical research already available in the realm of political violence.

Understanding people and groups of people objectively can lead to a greater understanding and cooperation between different groups, cultures, and countries. ARTIS aims to lay the foundations for this to become possible in the future; while ARTIS does not directly provide specific solutions to conflict, we do strive to provide the basis for such commitments to cooperation to occur.

While Network Analysis seeks to analyze the structure and relationships between groups, Social Movement Research centers on the relationship of individuals to the whole.
