Lawrence Hirschfeld


Senior Fellow

Professor Hirschfeld is Professor of Anthropology & Psychology, at the New School for Social Research and Senior Fellow at ARTIS Research. His research focuses on the psychological aspects of cultural life and the cultural dimension of mental life. He is especially interested in how young children come to understand and use social categories like race, gender, age, etc., particularly how children’s culture shapes the meaning of these categories for both the child and the adult. Dr. Hirschfeld obtained his PhD, MPhil, and MA, in Anthropology from Columbia University; and his BA from the University of Michigan.
