As a Young Investigator for Artis, Charles is researching the relationship between religion and society in Iraq between the two Gulf Wars; assessing how Saddam’s Faith Campaign (al-hamla al-imaniya) influenced Sunni Islamism in Iraq post-2003. The goal is to produce an analysis which practitioners and academics alike can use to better understand contemporary Iraq and some of the problems it faces.  

Charles is a graduate student at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins. Charles’s research focuses on the role of military power in countering the threat of non-state actors in the Middle East.  He obtained a BA from the University of Leeds with highest honors in International Relations; at Leeds, Charles focused his research on the politics of Islamism and militant Salafism.
